Important information on the situation in Mexico

Dear Neighbour,

This morning I heard from many of you who are currently visiting Mexico, as well as from those who have loved ones there. I understand how worrying the situation must be as the violent incidents that began yesterday continue to unfold in the region. Please know that my office remains available to offer support as the situation continues to unfold.

The Government of Canada takes the safety and security of Canadians abroad very seriously and provides credible and timely advice and advisories in its Travel advice and advisories - Travel.gc.ca. Currently, the Government of Canada Travel Advice and Advisories recommends Canadians to exercise a high degree of caution in Mexico.

Violent incidents in various parts of Mexico

Criminal groups have set up roadblocks with burning vehicles in several cities in various parts of Mexico. There have been shootouts with security forces and explosions, including on roads and highways connecting affected areas to Mexico City.

Security incidents have taken place across the country, especially in the following states:

Jalisco, including Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta
Guerrero, including Acapulco
Michoacán
Sinaloa, including Mazatlán
Quintana Roo, including Cancun
Baja California, including Tijuana and Tecate
Nayarit

The security situation could deteriorate rapidly in these locations and in others across Mexico.

Shelter in place orders are in effect in Jalisco and Nayarit. Similar instructions, including curfews, may be issued on short notice in other areas of the country.

There are significant disruptions to travel and transportation, including flight delays and cancellations.

Canadians in Mexico should:

avoid the affected areas
keep a low profile and limit movements
follow the advice of local authorities, including any curfews and orders to shelter in place
monitor local and international media to stay informed of the rapidly evolving situation
before travelling to the airport, Canadians check with their airline to determine if there are delays or changes in flight schedules.

Registration of Canadians Abroad (ROCA)

Canadians are encouraged to register with ROCA to receive important safety updates from the Government of Canada.

Due to the high volume of requests, the online registering system is slower than usual.
