The federal and provincial governments in partnership with the City of Toronto have directed the TTC to pursue a single-source deal with Alstom Inc to build the new Line 2 subway trains here in Canada.

As a regular transit rider, I’ve long supported improving our public transit system and it’s great to see these new subway trains being built right here in Canada. It means faster commutes, strong Canadian jobs, and support for Canadian industry.

The Canada Summer Jobs program provides organizations and businesses with funding to hire young people and support essential programming and small businesses in our community. This program equips youth with experience, skills, and confidence is essential to building a strong workforce and growing our economy. 

Recently I had the pleasure of visiting a few organizations in our riding to learn about the work their Canada Summer Jobs students are doing. From providing excellent summer camp programs for kids, supporting adults and youth with physical and developmental disabilities, taking climate action, to promoting arts and culture, this program provides rippling impacts across our community.

The Canada Summer Jobs program is helping youth to build their resumes, supporting vital community programming, and helping organizations and businesses to expand their reach.

Thank you to all the employers and students who took time to share their experiences and impact with me this summer.

I am pleased to share that the Call for Proposals for the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) Community-Based stream is now open, with applications accepted until September 17, 2025, at 3:00 pm ET.

The NHSP provides funding for grassroots projects that foster social inclusion and improve the quality of life for seniors. As one of the fastest-growing demographics in Canada, seniors are expected to make up nearly 25% of the population by 2051. Supporting healthy aging in our communities is essential, and local organizations that serve seniors play a vital role in this work.

Projects eligible for funding must address at least one of the following objectives:

Promoting volunteerism among seniors and other generations;

Engaging seniors in the community through the mentoring of others;

Expanding awareness of elder abuse, including financial abuse;

Supporting the social participation and inclusion of seniors; and

Providing capital assistance for new and existing community projects or programs for seniors

This year’s funding priorities include:

Supporting healthy aging;

Preventing senior abuse;

Celebrating diversity and promoting inclusion; and

Supporting financial security

Eligible organizations can apply for up to $25,000 for projects that are volunteer-based and led by seniors. More details on eligibility and the application process can be found here.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day are commemorated on September 30th. It is a time to honour residential school survivors, their families, and the children who never came home.

Ontario Fallen Firefighters Memorial Bike Ride Send-Off

The Ontario Fallen Firefighters Memorial Bike Ride Send-Off will take place at the Toronto Fire Academy, 895 Eastern Avenue, on Wednesday, September 3rd at 11:30 a.m.

This annual event sees firefighters cycling from Hamilton to Ottawa to raise funds and awareness for the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF). The ride concludes with a memorial ceremony in Ottawa to honour our fallen heroes.

The send-off is also an important opportunity to show support for our firefighting community and raise public awareness of their service. Your presence would be deeply appreciated, providing meaningful engagement with both firefighters and the broader community

Pape Village Block Party

The Pape Village Block Party is back for the 3rd year. Taking place September 20th, 12-9 PM and September 21st, 12-6 PM the block party will be happening on Pape Avenue between Mortimer and Cosburn. Enjoy live music, a variety of vendors, kid’s fun zone and more. Admission is free!

East End Adventure with Michael Garron Hospital Foundation

On Saturday, October 18th 2025, join Michael Garron Hospital Foundation’s inaugural East End Adventure, a fun-filled expedition through the east end. The day will consist of visiting local hot spots, completing challenges, and enjoying treats along the way, and earning entries for an exciting prize draw.

The event culminates in a family-friendly festival at Monarch Park featuring games, live entertainment, great food, and tons of family-friendly activities. Funds raised support Michael Garron Hospital’s most pressing needs and emerging priorities. 

You’ll be supporting a hospital that provides care from birth to end-of-life, serving 400,000 people living in East Toronto. The staff team delivers first-rate care on a first-name basis at a time when local healthcare has never been more important.
