Dear Neighbour,
Today President Trump implemented illegal and unjustified tariffs on Canadian goods. These unjustified tariffs will have a severe impact on both American and Canadian families, workers and businesses. We didn’t want this fight, but we won’t back down from it. We will stand up for Canada, for our families, our workers, and our sovereignty.
I want to be clear that these tariffs by President Trump are unjustified. Less than 1% of fentanyl intercepted at the U.S. border comes from Canada. Over the past month we have put in place further border control measures including new choppers, boots on the ground, more coordination on our border, and listing transnational criminal cartels as terrorist organizations. Over the month from December 2024-January 2025, fentanyl seizures dropped by 97% to just 0.03 pounds seized at the U.S. border. We have taken action to strengthen our border, which is good for both Canada and the U.S.
These U.S. tariffs were never about the border. As our Prime Minister said earlier today, “What he wants is to see a total collapse of the Canadian economy because that will make it easier to annex us...” That is never going to happen. We will never be the 51st state. We will need to stand together and fight this threat. I know from my conversations in the community that we have the strength and will to meet this moment.
Today, our government announced that in response to the U.S. tariffs, we will be proceeding with immediate 25% tariffs on $30 billion worth of U.S. goods.
Should the U.S. continue to apply tariffs on Canada, our government will impose additional countermeasures on another $125 billion worth of goods, taking effect in 21 days. While we urge the U.S. administration to reconsider their tariffs, Canada remains firm in standing up for a fair deal.
Because of the tariffs imposed by the U.S., Americans will pay more for groceries, gas, and cars, and potentially lose thousands of jobs. Tariffs will disrupt an incredibly successful trading relationship, and they will violate the very trade agreement that was negotiated by President Trump in his last term.
Now is the time for us to stand together and support one another, to shop local and support Canadian businesses. Our collective strength can send a clear message that we will not allow these unfair measures to undermine our country. Please reach out with your thoughts and feedback about how we can best support one another and fight back against these unjust tariffs. I won’t back down and I know that as a community we will pull together in the face of this threat to our sovereignty.
