Read this e-petition that I sponsored that calls on our federal government to look at ways to support the creation of City Charters. These charters would define the areas where cities like Toronto have sole authority.
Like many of you, I get around our city in many ways- by transit, on foot, by bike, and by car. Recently, we have seen the provincial government seek to overturn our city’s decisions about bike lanes on our streets. While people might have suggestions for improvements for our city’s roadways, I feel strongly that these decisions need to be left to the city.
The provincial government does have jurisdiction over Toronto and that is how we can see these frustrating interventions with city decisions. The city is looking at its options. Federally, I am asking the federal government to review how we can support the creation of city charters for cities like Toronto. A city charter could set out the exclusive authority of a city to act on municipal issues and clarify shared authority- with clear roles- to act with the province in areas of mutual interest.
Yours truly,
Julie
